An Unforgettable Summer Harvest: A Backyard Gardening Journey

 Tomatoes, Brassicas, and Monster Cabbages

While the tomato plants captured my attention and are healthy, thick and appear quite fruitful, the crop centres and features mye self much better. The cabbages are starting to show. Tom’s Early Jersey Wakefield is surely one of the handsomest of them all but the true hero of them all is the Savoy and Brunswick cabbages. These heads are just huge and each one of them almost feels like. 20 pounds.

What’s the best way to avoid cabbage worms? I learnt that I can use insect netting in the early stages of the plants and then switch to organic BT spray when the plants mature. It ensures good results and has been effective every single time.

Pink Lemonade Blueberries and a Splash of Color

Now, step back a little. Pink lemonade blueberries are the most adorable little gems available in the market that entice me. The berries are best harvested when they have a pinkish color and the sweetness is quite discernible especially compared to the blue variety, which is exquisite. this in addition to now eating them during the harvests make them even more enjoyable, not to mention how great the contrast of the two colored blueberries together looks.

Back to colors again, there are some wonderful graffiti purple cauliflowers that I have with me for exhibition purposes. The brilliance in its color is amazing and it’s quite endearing especially when they look forward to being masticated by cabbage worms, but a bit of BT and they are deterred.

Here’s a blast from the past, have you ever wondered what it is like to grow a cauliflower. I’ll tell you, it’s my favorite. Amongst all the many different kinds of cabbage, cauliflowers truly have my heart. But out of all the different kinds, particularly the graffiti purple variety blooms the lovely dark color of purple, and when you add it to a garden, how can one possibly hate it? And yet, graffiti purple is not the only purple variety there is Purple of Sicily which is two of the most purple varieties. The purple variants cultivates an incredible amount of flavor, texture, and color which truly plants a work of art.

Cauliflower: A Never-Ending Cycle Of Goodness

Another graffiti purple cauliflower head had to be picked. My heads might not be that large, the taste and quality are unparalleled. Homegrown food has an exceptional appeal that you will never find in food bought from a shop, I mean there is nothing quite like it.

Apples In Excess

Going forward, I decided to check on one of my apple trees and boy, this year there seems to be too many big apples on this tree. The Honeycrisp variety, which I love the most looks great. I usually try to garden responsibly without overloading the tree so that it continues to produce well the next year, but I cannot wait to try these.

The Bigger Picture

Gardening is not only about food, there is a deeper appreciation to getting your hands dirty and sharing the fruits of your labor, gardening is about nature. In my opinion there is no food that is fresh and organic as those which are home grown There is strength in having a crop only when it’s meant to be eaten, even during the winter you would be coping with the struggle of waiting for seasonal produce.
