A Delightful Fresh Harvest!

 Tomatoes, Tomatoes, and More Tomatoes!

Off I go to the tomato plants and oh my how far my crops have come. I now have so many varieties to chose from. The very first tomatoes I toss into my basket are Mushroom Basket – very large, pink tomatoes that have a few ribs on their exterior. Then I find some Pineapple Bi-colour tomatoes, spectacular with lovely yellow and red on the surface. Then there are Lemon Boy tomatoes, Super Sweet 100s and some Honey Drops. Each type has its own character clearly seen in their colors, shapes and even their taste. And as I watch my basket fill up with more and more items, the urge gets even stronger. Seeing how I have developed is quite gratifying as it proves how much I have invested myself in this garden.

Eggplants and Peppers

Next, I get some eggplants which I harvest. The Rosa Bianca eggplants can be considered ones of a kind, with beautiful and unique ribbed textures. I can’t forget to grab a few of the Antigua eggplants as they have this unique nutty taste and are some of my friends’ favorite. And there are some Cubanelle pepper plants which are maturing so I cut off some bigger ones to facilitate their easier growth.

Can’t Get Enough of Peppers

This year my disgraceful mistakes of overdoing my crops are not the Same. The Jimmy Nardello peppers are one of my all time favorite’s being so sweet and delicious, I do irrational things when it comes to them, like shading them a little longer than they ought to before i pick them as i still want them to be even better. For now i have some Crayola de Cocina peppers, which im sadly going to have to wait for them to fully color in so that I can properly snack on them. If anything, this is one of the core reasons as to why growing food is so enjoyable: The variety of unique shapes and colors. each incredible in their own sense.

Echinacea and Grapes

Next up on my schedule, I stop and take time to appreciate my Echinacea flowers in the permaculture garden. In additon to their aesthetic beauty, these flowers attract eastern goldfinches which is coincidence because New Jersey’s state bird is the eastern goldfinch. I’ve seen some of them around recently, but they’ve been avoiding the camera. The best part is that the Echinacea flowers reseed themselves adding the cherry on the cake of an adorable self-replicating biome.

But what I consider to be the main event of the day is my Niagara grapes. Grapes have a distinctive odor, which I find repulsive. It becomes apparent immediately you near the person or the object. How can I hold myself back? A few clusters manage to get my attention. Some are for fresh consumption, while others will be kept for jelly preparation. The light peering through the grapes is a sight to behold given the variety of colors they embody.

Perennials and Pears

Another bonus of owning a garden such as mine are the perennials. Each year, grapes, apples, and pears remain productive. My garden is consist of these plants; they provide my ‘harvest insurance’. Where tomatoes and peppers are the add-ons, the annuals are. Once these perennials are established, the return on investment can be enjoyed for years to come. While discussing pears, I must state that my Chijuro pear trees are full of fruits this year. Chijuro pears are very delicious and have a rich, sweet, and juicy flavor. I enjoy eating them freshly plucked off the branch. So, I pick a few for later since there are some gigantic ones today.
