Tomato Trellis and Harvest Starting with tomatoes because, well, for this season we can safely say they are the most important rest of crops as they are centerpiecesTomato Alley is an area I pride myself in as it is filled with varieties I have painstakingly picked out. To begin with, there are the Dr. Wes Yellow tomatoes, which are great for sandwiches and lovely to behold. Then, there’s a Ukrainian variety whose name I can hardly say, but who cares when they look this good?
The black cherry tomatoes are another favorite variety, being dark and flavorful. Oh, and the Mushroom Basket tomatoes—can’t forget about that. Wonderful varieties of tomatoes that are very prolific and have a great taste. And lastly, to conclude all these fancy tomatoes, my word, the tomato which i love the most is the Berkeley Tie-Dye. Quite an unusual sight in terms of colors, which are reminiscent of a tie dye. And right beside it? My evergreen Saki tomato. These tomatoes are great for salads since the cut so well.
Pollinator’s Paradise Another thing I’ve understood is that flowers are just as important as agricultural crops. This year, my garden is a full-on pollinator playground. Sunflowers are more than 15 feet long, asters made their entrance with their colors and bees are doing their work by hovering all over. It’s a fact that many/us forget about which is that flowers are not just for amusement but are very crucial for the garden.
Cucumbers All Around
Next let’s discuss cucumbers as these plants are in trend this year. There are many custom’s when using them to make salads. The long Suyo cucumbers are especially proud, some of them are almost as long as my arm, no kidding at all.The Mexican’s on the other hand are gherkins and sour. Now I have even got cucumbers that are growing instead of peaches, which is something I certainly never imagined, but now quite like.
And what do you think about the chicken pen? Cucumber feeding time seems to be a feast. I have a promising little pal, Tuck in the garden who seems to like the smaller ones. Good taste, as he’s all the time looking for the time when I open dozens of them, just to suck the best ones juice.
Chicken, Peppers and Farmer beans. All vegetables are important, but if you want to be a farmer, start with beans, and hence Dragon tongue beans should also be on the list. Tuck doesn’t hassle me now because its beans are productive and delicious. What a season it has been for peppers, this year’s farming season has been amazing for peppers and garlic also. I didn’t get the onions how I wanted. However, they seem to be doing well in some of the out of sight areas.
Squash: a target to achieve
Boom! An out of this world American white scallop squash, one of the highlight this year the ancient Amercans hardly look for. Growing this variety, to me, growing this particular squash variety feels historic, the free of ‘out of the world’ flavors, wow.
Today’s harvest also includes Costata Romanesco squash which has been a pleasant surprise. These plants are quite prolific and the squash is just the right size at this period. It’s remarkable the amount of yield a single plant can give so these have become a staple in my garden.
Future Considerations
During harvesting, I am now already planning for the next round of crops- I have already sowed seeds for cucumbers for timely production. It is always better to plan ahead so as to be able to have a constant supply of crops.
